Our current programme of courses, run in collaboration with Southwark Council’s Adult Learning Department, consists of:
ESOL
A course for people just starting to learn English, using a combination of classroom and IT-based learning, which provides an introduction to target language around daily tasks such as shopping, visiting a doctor, etc.
IT for beginners
An introductory course for people wanting to get to grips with using a computer for the first time. The course includes word processing, searching the internet, registering for a free email address, accessing public services and shopping online.
Creating an online web-space
A taster course looking at everything from creating pages on social networking sites such as facebook, youtube and myspace, using media such as blogging and twittering, through to creating simple websites with user-friendly templates that are available for free or very low cost.
Introduction to film and video production
A taster course in using photographs, digital images and short films taken with different kinds of equipment including digital cameras, camcorders, mobile phones etc.
Introduction to community development
A short course for local people interested in getting more involved in activity within the wider community including understanding how community organisations work, what is already out there and how someone could start and get funding to run a project themselves.
Making money from your hobby
A course exploring different ways people make money from their hobby, including how to package or promote what is on offer, working out costs and prices, finding potential customers using both traditional methods and online options such as e-bay.
Managing your personal finances through the crunch
With personal finances under pressure due to wider financial pressures, this course looks at creative ways to make people’s money go further including reducing household bills, shopping online, preparing personal and household budgets etc.
Skills for working life
This course focuses on helping people develop the softer skills needed to have confidence in the workplace & either to move into employment or to move out of low wage jobs into higher paid positions.
Gypsy, Roma, Traveller history
A taster course in Gypsy, Roma, Traveller history using storytelling and creative approaches to learning about history and heritage. The course will involve people from Southwark’s traveller community who will be using personal stories as case study material for the wider course learning objectives of Gypsy, Roma, Traveller history.
Repair, reuse, recycle
A course focusing on how to mend and repair things instead of throwing them away, as well as other things people can do to reuse and recycle, including finding out about charities that reuse books, computers and bicycles, and using websites such as ebay and freecycle.
Gardening in small spaces
This short course, led by an experienced professional gardener, focuses on things that can be grown in small spaces, such as hanging baskets, plant pots and balconies. Combining hints and tips for both plants, flowers and vegetables the course is a great introduction for people who would like to do some gardening but don’t know how to get started.
