We have many opportunities for volunteers to get involved in what we do – examples include joining in with our HOurBank project, providing telephone support to older people living locally, reading with our nursery children, staffing our reception office or doing some volunteer youth work.
We offer volunteers: The opportunity to develop practical workplace skills such as inter-personal communication and computer skills. A stepping stone into careers such as marketing, business development, education, health and social care, IT, fundraising, community development and the charity/social enterprise sector in general. The opportunity to extend the reach of our current services and see more people directly benefit from our work. The opportunity to give something back to the community, working alongside our staff team who do what they do because they are committed to making a difference to people’s lives.
We find that volunteering works best where each volunteer has an agreed role that meets their own objectives and the needs of the organisation. All volunteers will work toward agreed objectives appropriate to the time they are able to give. We also find it helpful to write a volunteer agreement, which includes the amount of time a volunteer wants to give and sets out specific elements of the role as well as clarifies expectations on both sides. Depending upon the time commitment, volunteers can expect to be included and consulted over ideas and planning stages for new projects and will be given tasks initially to encourage familiarity with the Settlement. Volunteers will also be encouraged to participate in suitable meetings to observe internal project management.
We are particularly keen to hear from people with a sound knowledge of basic Microsoft software, who have good communication and organisational skills. We are able to reimburse local travel expenses and lunch costs up to £3.50 per day. There will also be the opportunity to undertake one of the many courses we deliver, such as our Introduction to Community Development short course.
Volunteer time commitment usually falls into one of three broad categories, which are: Short term – a one off activity such as an individual fundraising event with time commitment of between 4 and 8 hours. Medium term – a regular and recurring activity for a fixed period such as giving one morning a week to staff the reception office in our community centre. Typically this kind of commitment would be around half a day per week for 10-12 weeks. Long term or ‘Internship’ - a work placement or longer term commitment with a specific purpose and job description for an extended period of time – typically a minimum of 2 to 3 days a week for 3 to 6 months.
Specific longer-term or internship opportunities include: Nursery Intern Part-time Receptionist Business Development Intern Marketing Intern
