The Peckham Settlement has a long and rich history, having been originally established in 1896 as the Union of Girls’ Schools for Social Service. In the early years the founding schools, which eventually numbered 140, supported the Settlement with volunteers, management capacity and funding. The Settlement was originally based in Peckham Road and moved to the present Goldsmith Road site in 1931. As an organisation we have always sought to respond to social needs in the Peckham area, developing innovative solutions to emerging problems. We have a long history of innovation which includes pioneering unemployment insurance 100 years ago, and subsequently nursery schools, meals on wheels and job clubs. We are currently working on innovative approaches to community engagement, such as our SE Village project.
