Welcome to the Peckham Settlement Home Page

The Peckham Settlement is a local charity which was established in 1896 to meet the needs of local people and to give support to the local community.  It does this by providing a range of services which may change from time to time according to need and the resources available.

The services provided at present are listed under Current Activities.  These include services run by the Peckham Settlement itself and many other community services run by other organisations which are based in the Peckham Settlement.

The philosophy of the Peckham Settlement has always been to innovate and seek new solutions to social problems old and new, wherever possible.  Thus the Peckham Settlement was a pioneer of unemployment insurance 100 years ago, subsequently of nursery schools and meals on wheels, and more recently of job clubs.  At present the All Nations Nursery is piloting a respite care scheme which allows parents, in collaboration with Sure Start health visitors, to leave their child for pre-arranged periods of time.  Local experiments like these can provide ideas for new national policies.
